A team of four animals with a man walking behind them crosses the bright slope at right, birds wheel above, and at lower left a rider on a white horse passes through dark bushes. A church spire and cottages rise among trees on the left. David Lucas engraved this mezzotint after Constable's painting, published in 1831.

The original: mezzotint by David Lucas after John Constable, 1831, The Cleveland Museum of Art.

John Constable (1776–1837) was an English landscape painter, born in East Bergholt, Suffolk, the son of a prosperous miller. He entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1799 and chose landscape over the history painting the academies favoured, returning again and again to his native Stour valley and sketching in oil out of doors. The White Horse (1819) began a series of six large canvases of the river, among them The Hay Wain (1821), which won a gold medal at the Paris Salon of 1824. His work was admired in France, where it inspired the Barbizon painters, and he became a full Academician only at 52. His paintings are held by the National Gallery, London, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
