The subject comes from Donizetti's 1840 opera about Marie, a French officer's daughter adopted by his regiment; Millais imagined her wounded in a skirmish and laid on the tomb by a soldier. A child prodigy, he became the youngest student admitted to the Royal Academy Schools in 1840, and in 1848 co-founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt, painting early works in minute, brightly coloured detail from direct observation. He later moved toward a broader, more fluid manner as a fashionable portraitist and painter of popular sentimental subjects, becoming President of the Royal Academy shortly before his death.
