Its subject was an unusual one: the capture of the Inca emperor Atahualpa by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1532. A child prodigy, he became the youngest student admitted to the Royal Academy Schools in 1840, and in 1848 co-founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt, painting early works in minute, brightly coloured detail from direct observation. He later moved toward a broader, more fluid manner as a fashionable portraitist and painter of popular sentimental subjects, becoming President of the Royal Academy shortly before his death.
