He joined Morris \u0026amp; Co. as a shop assistant in 1878, trained under William Morris in the firm's glass-painting and tapestry workshops, and rose to become its chief designer by 1890; after Morris died in 1896 he was appointed art director, and became the firm's principal stained-glass designer following Edward Burne-Jones's death in 1898. Working in the dense, floral Morris \u0026amp; Co. idiom, he designed wallpapers, embroidery, carpets and tapestries that kept the firm producing in its founder's style well into the twentieth century.
