At the left, letters of light blaze across the wall in a fan of rays. In the foreground a long banquet table spread with gold vessels sits among fleeing, kneeling and fallen guests in white and red; a dark-robed figure points from its centre. A coiled serpent column rears at the left and a seven-branched lampstand burns at the right.

The original: oil on canvas, 1820; Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Collection.

John Martin (1789–1854) was an English painter and mezzotint engraver famous for vast apocalyptic and biblical scenes: Belshazzar's Feast (1820), The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (1852) and Pandemonium (1841). His mezzotints for Milton's Paradise Lost (1825–27) carried his visions of colossal architecture and infernal light to a wide public. The Last Judgement triptych is in Tate Britain.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
