Above it, pale ghostly ranks of robed figures gather on a bright plain beneath a radiant sun, with winged figures at the right. On the dark ground below, a figure in blue flings up an arm against a fork of white lightning while others lie fallen beside a dropped crown. Black smoke billows at the upper right and a crowd surges in haze at the left.

The original: oil on panel, 1851-53; Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Fund.

John Martin (1789–1854) was an English painter and mezzotint engraver famous for vast apocalyptic and biblical scenes: Belshazzar's Feast (1820), The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (1852) and Pandemonium (1841). His mezzotints for Milton's Paradise Lost (1825–27) carried his visions of colossal architecture and infernal light to a wide public. The Last Judgement triptych is in Tate Britain.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
