john-singer-sargent-henry-james-fine-art-print
John Singer Sargent — Henry James | Fine Art Print

A balding man with grey hair at the sides looks straight out of the shadows, his face lit in warm pinks against a dark brown ground. He wears a high white collar with a black bow tie, a dark striped waistcoat with dark buttons and a black jacket; a gold watch chain loops across the waistcoat at the bottom. One ringed hand rests low on the right side of the picture. The signature is faint at upper left and the date at upper right.

A group of subscribers commissioned the portrait to mark Henry James's seventieth birthday, and Sargent, an old friend, waived his fee. It was shown at the Royal Academy's summer exhibition in 1914, where a suffragette, Mary Wood, slashed it three times with a cleaver. James had left it to the National Portrait Gallery in London, to which it passed on his death in 1916.

The original: oil on canvas, 1913, National Portrait Gallery, London.

John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) was the leading portrait painter of his generation, born in Florence to American parents and trained in Paris under Carolus-Duran. The scandal of Madame X drove him to London in 1884, where he painted the aristocracy and the great merchant families for two decades before abandoning commissioned portraiture in 1907 for watercolour, landscape and mural work. He travelled constantly — Venice, the Alps, Spain, the Middle East, Florida — painting in oil and watercolour with a bravura touch that was widely imitated and never matched. His work is held by the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Tate and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.

Printed as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
