john-singer-sargent-on-his-holidays-norway-fine-art-print
John Singer Sargent — On His Holidays, Norway | Fine Art Print

A boy in a grey cap, white shirt, braces and grey trousers reclines on a broad pale rock beside rushing rapids, his head propped on one hand as he gazes off to the left. His other hand grips a long gaff with a hooked tip, and a brown landing net lies beneath his legs. A fishing rod runs across the rock towards two silver salmon laid on green leaves at the right. Behind him, white water breaks around grey boulders. The signature is at the lower right.

The sitter is Alexander McCulloch, then a schoolboy at Winchester College, resting after salmon fishing in the Sundal Valley in Norway, where Sargent travelled with him and his father, the collector George McCulloch, in 1901. Shown at the Royal Academy in 1902, it was admired for its silvery northern daylight. Sargent first made sketches of the boy standing with the net, and of the river and the salmon.

The original: oil on canvas, 1901, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight.

John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) was the leading portrait painter of his generation, born in Florence to American parents and trained in Paris under Carolus-Duran. The scandal of Madame X drove him to London in 1884, where he painted the aristocracy and the great merchant families for two decades before abandoning commissioned portraiture in 1907 for watercolour, landscape and mural work. He travelled constantly — Venice, the Alps, Spain, the Middle East, Florida — painting in oil and watercolour with a bravura touch that was widely imitated and never matched. His work is held by the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Tate and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.

Printed as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
