joris-hoefnagel-caterpillar-dog-tooth-violet-pear-and-apricot-botanical-calligraphy-print
Joris Hoefnagel — Caterpillar, Dog-Tooth Violet, Pear, and Apricot | Botanical Calligraphy Print

Seven lines of black script, wreathed in fine gold pen flourishes and opened by a large pale-blue calligraphic initial, fill the upper half of the vellum page. Below, the painting takes over: a nodding white dog-tooth violet on a long arching stalk, a striped caterpillar hanging beside it, a yellow pear blushed with red, a speckled orange apricot, and between them a feathery-leaved stem carrying a white flower with pink-tipped petals. The pear, the apricot and the stem cast soft grey shadows on the bare page.

Georg Bocskay, court secretary to the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I, wrote this model book of scripts in Vienna in 1561–62 to show the range of hands he commanded. About thirty years later Ferdinand's grandson, Emperor Rudolf II, commissioned Joris Hoefnagel to add fruit, flowers and insects to nearly every page, each composed to balance the writing around it.

The original: a leaf from the Mira calligraphiae monumenta (Model Book of Calligraphy), watercolours, gold and silver paint and ink on parchment, written by Georg Bocskay in Vienna in 1561–62 and illuminated 1591–96; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.

Joris Hoefnagel (1542–1600) was a Flemish artist, poet and traveller, the last major Flemish manuscript illuminator and one of the first artists to paint still life. Born to a wealthy merchant family, he recorded his travels in topographical drawings later used for a six-volume atlas, and served as court artist first to Albert V, duke of Bavaria, and from 1591 to Emperor Rudolf II. For Rudolf he painted flowers, fruit and insects onto the pages of a calligraphy model book written thirty years earlier by Georg Bocskay, now in the J. Paul Getty Museum.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order. Unframed prints are made on Hahnemühle German Etching, a 310gsm matte fine-art paper.
