joris-hoefnagel-damselfly-french-rose-spanish-chestnut-and-spider-botanical-calligraphy-print
Joris Hoefnagel — Damselfly, French Rose, Spanish Chestnut, and Spider | Botanical Calligraphy Print

A dense block of slanting script with a small gilded initial B sits high on the page. Below it a full pink French rose and a tight bud rise on a bristly stem, a damselfly with grey wings and a blue-and-black body clinging head-down to the open bloom. At the lower left a spiny chestnut husk splits to show a glossy brown nut, while a small brown spider hangs on a single thread beside the stem, fine strands of web strung across the vellum.

Bocskay wrote the script in Vienna in 1561–62; some thirty years later Emperor Rudolf II asked Joris Hoefnagel to paint the book's pages with natural specimens. His fruit, flowers and insects complemented Rudolf's celebrated cabinet of curiosities, with its shells, fossils and bones, and the Getty notes that they influenced the development of Netherlandish still-life painting.

The original: a leaf from the Mira calligraphiae monumenta (Model Book of Calligraphy), watercolours, gold and silver paint and ink on parchment, written by Georg Bocskay in Vienna in 1561–62 and illuminated 1591–96; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.

Joris Hoefnagel (1542–1600) was a Flemish artist, poet and traveller, the last major Flemish manuscript illuminator and one of the first artists to paint still life. Born to a wealthy merchant family, he recorded his travels in topographical drawings later used for a six-volume atlas, and served as court artist first to Albert V, duke of Bavaria, and from 1591 to Emperor Rudolf II. For Rudolf he painted flowers, fruit and insects onto the pages of a calligraphy model book written thirty years earlier by Georg Bocskay, now in the J. Paul Getty Museum.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order. Unframed prints are made on Hahnemühle German Etching, a 310gsm matte fine-art paper.
