Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eJoris Hoefnagel (1542–1600) was a Flemish artist, poet and traveller, the last major Flemish manuscript illuminator and one of the first artists to paint still life. Born to a wealthy merchant family, he recorded his travels in topographical drawings later used for a six-volume atlas, and served as court artist first to Albert V, duke of Bavaria, and from 1591 to Emperor Rudolf II. For Rudolf he painted flowers, fruit and insects onto the pages of a calligraphy model book written thirty years earlier by Georg Bocskay, now in the J.
