Columns of verse name a barber, a shoemaker, a butcher, a seamstress, a laundress and other townspeople, most stanzas ending with the modern bells tolling for them, and small cuts of skulls and heads are set among the verses.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: zincograph and letterpress on orange paper, 1905, The Metropolitan Museum of Art.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eJosé Guadalupe Posada (1851\/52–1913) was a Mexican printmaker, born in Aguascalientes, who learned lithography and engraving as an apprentice to José Trinidad Pedroza. After drawing political cartoons and running a print shop in León, he moved to Mexico City in 1888 and worked for the publisher Antonio Vanegas Arroyo, producing thousands of illustrations for broadsides, songsheets and cheap books. His calaveras, lively skeletons dressed for every trade and class, made the point that death takes everyone; the best known, La Calavera Catrina, was later taken up by Diego Rivera and became a figure of the Day of the Dead.
