He trained at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City under the Italian landscape painter Eugenio Landesio, and also studied botany, zoology, geology and surveying; in 1879 he described a new species of salamander. His subject was the Valley of Mexico, painted in wide panoramas over several decades, among them The Valley of Mexico from the Santa Isabel Hill (1875), which won a medal at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. He also painted the pyramids of Teotihuacán and the volcanoes, and won a medal in Paris in 1889.
