He wears a loose grey-green coat trimmed in mauve. On the green tablecloth at the lower left sit a brazier of glowing coals, a clay pipe, a twist of paper with tobacco and two crossed spills. The date 1629 and the artist's monogram are lettered on the plain wall above.

The original: oil on canvas, 1629; Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.

Judith Leyster (1609–1660) was a Dutch painter from Haarlem and one of the very few women admitted to the city's Guild of St Luke, in 1633, where she ran her own workshop with pupils. She painted lively genre scenes, musicians and drinkers close in spirit to Frans Hals, and married the painter Jan Miense Molenaer in 1636. Much of her work was long credited to Hals before her monogram was recognised in the 1890s.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
