Behind her a loosely brushed dark-blue silhouette figure lifts both arms overhead, a touch of red at its shoulder, and two more faces are sketched faintly at the right in soft pink and blue washes. Lettering below names the scene backstage at the Paris Opéra, staged at the Musée Grévin.

Jules Chéret (1836–1932) was the father of the modern poster. A trained lithographer, he set up his own press in Paris in 1866 and over the next four decades produced more than a thousand colour posters for theatres, dance halls, perfumes and lamp oil, populated by the laughing, airborne women Parisians called Chérettes. He received the Légion d'honneur in 1890 for creating a new branch of art. His posters are held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.

Printed as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
