jules-cheret-diorama-au-jardin-des-tuileries-vintage-poster-print
Jules Chéret — Diorama au Jardin des Tuileries | Vintage Poster Print

The Statue of Liberty fills the sheet from the waist up, her bronze-brown robes cross-hatched in fine line, her spiked crown standing against a blue sky. The raised torch cuts through the first letter of an orange and black title, and the tablet in her other arm carries 4th July 1776. Behind her a wide harbour is drawn in grey line, with sailing ships, a steamer trailing smoke and a low round building at the far right. The lettering advertises a diorama of New York harbour at the Tuileries garden.

The original: colour lithograph, 1878; Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris.

Jules Chéret (1836–1932) was the father of the modern poster. A trained lithographer, he set up his own press in Paris in 1866 and over the next four decades produced more than a thousand colour posters for theatres, dance halls, perfumes and lamp oil, populated by the laughing, airborne women Parisians called Chérettes. He received the Légion d'honneur in 1890 for creating a new branch of art. His posters are held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
