Willette | Vintage Poster Print

Seen from behind on a wooden stool, a fair-haired woman in a low-backed white dress paints a man's black profile on a huge red disc set on an easel. A palette and brushes swing out in her left hand, and a slipper has dropped beside her bare foot. A black cat with a raised tail arches over an open paint box at the lower left. The ground is a pale sea green, and the lettering round the disc advertises an exhibition of pictures and drawings by A. Willette.

The original: colour lithograph, 1888; Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris.

Jules Chéret (1836–1932) was the father of the modern poster. A trained lithographer, he set up his own press in Paris in 1866 and over the next four decades produced more than a thousand colour posters for theatres, dance halls, perfumes and lamp oil, populated by the laughing, airborne women Parisians called Chérettes. He received the Légion d'honneur in 1890 for creating a new branch of art. His posters are held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
