jules-cheret-kursaal-de-lucerne-vintage-poster-print
Jules Chéret — Kursaal de Lucerne | Vintage Poster Print

A long cream-white hall with slate roofs and four Swiss flags stretches along a stone quay, its windows doubled in pale blue water. A moored steamer smokes at the left beside a boathouse, two small sailing boats and two rowing boats cross the lake, and tiny strollers with parasols walk the promenade. Mauve and green mountains rise behind to white peaks. Huge orange-red letters arc across the blue sky to name the Kursaal de Lucerne, and a boxed panel closes the foot.

The original: colour lithograph, 1887; Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris.

Jules Chéret (1836–1932) was the father of the modern poster. A trained lithographer, he set up his own press in Paris in 1866 and over the next four decades produced more than a thousand colour posters for theatres, dance halls, perfumes and lamp oil, populated by the laughing, airborne women Parisians called Chérettes. He received the Légion d'honneur in 1890 for creating a new branch of art. His posters are held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
