A lettered and numbered grid frames the plan. The title block at upper left reads Straube's Plan von Berlin, with the scale 1:17,777, and a boxed key at lower right explains the railway, tram and boundary lines.

The original: city plan of Berlin, 1899, Boston Public Library, Norman B. Leventhal Map & Education Center.

Julius Straube (1832–1913) was a Berlin cartographer, the son of a master butcher, who began military cartographic training at fifteen and worked as an engraver on Reymann's Specialkarte von Central-Europa. In 1858 he founded the Geographisches Institut und Landkartenverlag Julius Straube in Berlin, which he ran until 1886 before his son Benno took over. The firm specialised in thematic Berlin city plans drawn from official sources and published its large 1:4,000 plan of Berlin on 44 sheets from 1885. Between the 1870s and the First World War it was the leading Berlin map house, with about 36 percent of the market.

Printed as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
