Attendants in orange, pink and mauve crowd behind them, one holding a hookah. In a window below, women play a drum, a tambourine and a long-necked lute. A peacock perches on the terrace edge above a green valley with a lotus pond, a banana plant and a fruiting tree.

The original: opaque watercolour and gold on paper, about 1780–90, Minneapolis Institute of Art.

Kangra school is the lyrical style of Pahari painting associated with the hill state of Kangra, in present-day Himachal Pradesh. It grew from the family of Pandit Seu of Guler, whose sons Manaku and Nainsukh brought a softer line, muted colour and a naturalism learned from late Mughal painting to the hills from about 1730. Their sons painted series of the Gita Govinda, the Bhagavata Purana and the Ramayana, and the style reached its peak under Raja Sansar Chand of Kangra (r. 1775–1823). Kangra pictures set Krishna and Radha, lovers and heroines in green, rolling landscapes under monsoon skies. Examples are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art and Minneapolis Institute of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
