It grew from the family of Pandit Seu of Guler, whose sons Manaku and Nainsukh brought a softer line, muted colour and a naturalism learned from late Mughal painting to the hills from about 1730. Their sons painted series of the Gita Govinda, the Bhagavata Purana and the Ramayana, and the style reached its peak under Raja Sansar Chand of Kangra (r. 1775–1823). Kangra pictures set Krishna and Radha, lovers and heroines in green, rolling landscapes under monsoon skies.
