Pale monkeys gather around it, some bowed, one carrying a branch, one wading in the stream below. In a cave at upper left a blue-skinned seated figure and a standing archer speak with a crowned monkey; a golden palace shows inside a cave at right, and huts with seated ascetics sit among trees at the centre. A dark blue floral border frames the scene.

The original: ink, opaque watercolor, silver, and gold on paper, ca. 1780; Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Kangra school is the lyrical style of Pahari painting associated with the hill state of Kangra, in present-day Himachal Pradesh. It grew from the family of Pandit Seu of Guler, whose sons Manaku and Nainsukh brought a softer line, muted colour and a naturalism learned from late Mughal painting to the hills from about 1730. Their sons painted series of the Gita Govinda, the Bhagavata Purana and the Ramayana, and the style reached its peak under Raja Sansar Chand of Kangra (r. 1775–1823). Kangra pictures set Krishna and Radha, lovers and heroines in green, rolling landscapes under monsoon skies. Examples are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art and Minneapolis Institute of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
