The head is packed with rounded, overlapping bracts edged in fine papery fringes, and twisted florets rise in a ragged crown from the top. Every surface is sharply modelled in greys against a pale grey ground. The plate comes from Blossfeldt's 1928 book Urformen der Kunst, printed in photogravure.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: photogravure, 1928, National Gallery of Art, Washington.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eKarl Blossfeldt (1865–1932) was a German photographer and teacher, born in Schielo. He trained in sculpture and iron casting, studied at the school of the Berlin Museum of Decorative Arts, and from 1890 worked in Rome under the ornament designer Moritz Meurer, photographing casts of plants. From 1898 he taught design in Berlin, building an archive of plant photographs for his students. Without photographic training, he used homemade cameras that magnified stems, buds and seed heads up to thirty times. First exhibited in 1926, the pictures were published as Urformen der Kunst (Art Forms in Nature, 1928) and were seen as forerunners of New Objectivity photography.
