He trained in sculpture and iron casting, studied at the school of the Berlin Museum of Decorative Arts, and from 1890 worked in Rome under the ornament designer Moritz Meurer, photographing casts of plants. From 1898 he taught design in Berlin, building an archive of plant photographs for his students. Without photographic training, he used homemade cameras that magnified stems, buds and seed heads up to thirty times. First exhibited in 1926, the pictures were published as Urformen der Kunst (Art Forms in Nature, 1928) and were seen as forerunners of New Objectivity photography.
