Left of centre, a stockaded fort with two peaked roofs stands among scattered tipis, with small figures and animals on the grass around it. In the lower right foreground a figure in a dark robe sits on an orange rock and looks toward the fort. The tones are soft browns, buff and grey-green.

Karl Bodmer (1809–1893) was a Swiss-born painter and printmaker. Born in Zurich, he was trained by his uncle, the engraver Johann Jakob Meier. Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied hired him for an expedition to North America; in 1833–34 they travelled up the Missouri River to Fort McKenzie and wintered at Fort Clark, where Bodmer painted portraits of Mandan, Hidatsa, Blackfoot and other Plains people from life. Eighty-one aquatints after his work illustrated Maximilian's Travels in the Interior of North America. He then settled at Barbizon, painting the forest of Fontainebleau and its animals, including deer. He became a French citizen and in 1877 a knight of the Legion of Honour. His work is held by the Joslyn Art Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
