Through the frame of trees a still river opens into haze, with cattle wading and drinking along the right-hand bank and a low boat trailing smoke far out on the water. The palette is soft brown, cream and grey-blue.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eKarl Bodmer (1809–1893) was a Swiss-born painter and printmaker. Born in Zurich, he was trained by his uncle, the engraver Johann Jakob Meier. Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied hired him for an expedition to North America; in 1833–34 they travelled up the Missouri River to Fort McKenzie and wintered at Fort Clark, where Bodmer painted portraits of Mandan, Hidatsa, Blackfoot and other Plains people from life. Eighty-one aquatints after his work illustrated Maximilian's Travels in the Interior of North America. He then settled at Barbizon, painting the forest of Fontainebleau and its animals, including deer. He became a French citizen and in 1877 a knight of the Legion of Honour.
