Bodmer, pinx. et lith.' lettered under the image at left and the printer's line for Bertauts at right.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eKarl Bodmer (1809–1893) was a Swiss-born painter and printmaker. Born in Zurich, he was trained by his uncle, the engraver Johann Jakob Meier. Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied hired him for an expedition to North America; in 1833–34 they travelled up the Missouri River to Fort McKenzie and wintered at Fort Clark, where Bodmer painted portraits of Mandan, Hidatsa, Blackfoot and other Plains people from life. Eighty-one aquatints after his work illustrated Maximilian's Travels in the Interior of North America. He then settled at Barbizon, painting the forest of Fontainebleau and its animals, including deer. He became a French citizen and in 1877 a knight of the Legion of Honour.
