Her blue dress falls in long pen strokes to a red cross-hatched hem, and a square neckline is edged in the same red. Her dark hair is gathered low at the nape. Around her the ground is a dense black thicket of hatching that thins to a pale lilac glow behind her head. The drawing sits within a hatched rectangle on cream paper, with a plain margin all round.

Karl Wiener (1901–1949) was an Austrian graphic artist. Born in Graz, he trained at the local Landeskunstschule and then at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule (1926–1931) under Bertold Löffler and Rudolf von Larisch, later studying graphics under Rudolf Jettmar. Based in Vienna from 1937, he worked chiefly in political and socially critical photomontage for social-democratic publications, work for which historians have compared him to John Heartfield, and he taught at the Kunstgewerbeschule from 1940 to 1947. His artistic estate is held by the Wien Museum.

Printed as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
