Its skull grins, its bones traced in loose, doubled strokes. Above it a dense drift of white stars, some drawn as small rayed crosses, sweeps up to the top right of the tall sheet. The title is written by hand at the lower left, and the initials KW with the year 1941 at the lower right.

Karl Wiener (1901–1949) was an Austrian graphic artist. Born in Graz, he trained at the local Landeskunstschule and then at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule (1926–1931) under Bertold Löffler and Rudolf von Larisch, later studying graphics under Rudolf Jettmar. Based in Vienna from 1937, he worked chiefly in political and socially critical photomontage for social-democratic publications, work for which historians have compared him to John Heartfield, and he taught at the Kunstgewerbeschule from 1940 to 1947. His artistic estate is held by the Wien Museum.

Printed as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
