Two arched bridges cross inlets, thatched and blue-roofed buildings cluster along the shore at the lower right, and moored boats wait below the hill, one flying a pennant. Long deep blue bands of water reach in from the left under a pale blue sky, with small sails on the far horizon. The title cartouche is at the upper right.

The original: woodblock print, about 1833–34, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) is the most widely known of all Japanese artists. Over a seventy-year career he worked under some thirty names, produced books, sketches and paintings by the thousand, and in his seventies designed the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, including The Great Wave and Red Fuji, which reshaped landscape printmaking and later European art. He called himself the old man mad about drawing. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
