Their bare skin is left pale, with bands of pink and yellow fringe at the waist, and black flecks of sand dot the ground at the bottom. The ground behind them shades from blue-grey to cream. Two columns of lettering run down the top, and a signature and a seal sit at lower right.

The original: woodblock print, ca. 1783, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) is the most widely known of all Japanese artists. Over a seventy-year career he worked under some thirty names, produced books, sketches and paintings by the thousand, and in his seventies designed the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, including The Great Wave and Red Fuji, which reshaped landscape printmaking and later European art. He called himself the old man mad about drawing. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
