A black ink signature and one square red seal sit at the lower right.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eKawanabe Kyōsai (1831–1889) was a painter and caricaturist whose career spanned the end of the Edo period and the Meiji era. Born in Koga, the son of a samurai, he worked briefly as a boy with Utagawa Kuniyoshi before training in the Kanō school under Maemura Tōwa. His caricatures of the political upheaval around 1867 led to arrests under both the shogunate and the new government. He painted demons, crows and subjects from folklore, Noh and religion.
