Before it an old man with a long white beard and a fur hat crowned with quills leans on a staff, his robe patterned in brown and white checks with embroidered flower roundels and swirling medallions. Beside him walks a young lad in a white kerchief and patched checked trousers, a bundle slung over his shoulder. Weeping trees with pale twisting trunks stand at left.

The original: colour halftone plate from East of the Sun and West of the Moon, Hodder & Stoughton, London, 1914.
