Before him a huge dark crag curls overhead, veined with white and topped with pale roses, while thin branches trail strands of red leaves from a sky fading from pale blue to pink. At its foot three princesses in tall jewelled copper-coloured crowns stand buried to their necks, long golden hair spreading over a black ground of pebbles and small flowers.

The original: a colour plate from East of the Sun and West of the Moon (London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1914), in a copy held by Boston College Libraries.

Kay Nielsen (1886–1957) was a Danish illustrator, born in Copenhagen to a family of actors.
