Geumgang: Hwanseonjeong | Korean Painting Art Print

Tall pillars of columnar rock crowd the left of the leaf, their flat tops tufted with shrubs, while toppled blocks of the same stone spill into a pale grey-blue sea patterned with fine ripples. Beyond, a small hut sends up a wisp of smoke beside a lone column on the shore, and hills and a long headland fold away toward the horizon, with low islands offshore. The place name is brushed at upper left, and two red seals sit at lower right.

Kim Hong-do (1745–c. 1806), known by his art name Danwon, was a Korean court painter of the Joseon dynasty from the jungin, or middle, class. He studied as a boy with the painter and critic Kang Sehwang, entered the royal Bureau of Painting in his early twenties, and in 1771 painted the crown prince, the future King Jeongjo; he was a favourite of Yeongjo and Jeongjo. He painted landscapes, Buddhist and Daoist themes, portraits, flowers and animals, but is known above all for humorous, lively genre scenes of ordinary people at work and leisure, gathered in the album Genre Paintings by Danwon. He is counted among the Three Wons of Joseon painting. The album of 25 leaves is held by the National Museum of Korea.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
