Geumgang: Munam | Korean Painting Art Print

A massive arch of fissured rock, tufted with pine, stands on a pale beach at the centre, with another tall crag at the right edge. Through the arch a road runs down to the sand, where a rider on a small mount and a walker pass beneath, with three more travellers just behind them. To the left, jagged rocks and reefs break a calm, pale blue sea that runs flat to the horizon. The place name is brushed at upper left, with two red seals set further left.

Kim Hong-do (1745–c. 1806), known by his art name Danwon, was a Korean court painter of the Joseon dynasty from the jungin, or middle, class. He studied as a boy with the painter and critic Kang Sehwang, entered the royal Bureau of Painting in his early twenties, and in 1771 painted the crown prince, the future King Jeongjo; he was a favourite of Yeongjo and Jeongjo. He painted landscapes, Buddhist and Daoist themes, portraits, flowers and animals, but is known above all for humorous, lively genre scenes of ordinary people at work and leisure, gathered in the album Genre Paintings by Danwon. He is counted among the Three Wons of Joseon painting. The album of 25 leaves is held by the National Museum of Korea.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
