Geumgang: Ongcheon | Korean Painting Art Print

On the left a tall rocky headland drops toward the sea, and a pale path climbs a cleft in its flank, edged with small pines. Beyond it the coast curves round a quiet bay where a village of thatched roofs sits on the flat shore below rounded mountains. Rocky reefs and a low island dot the water at right, which is drawn with faint rippling lines. The place name is brushed at upper right, with two red seals to its left.

Kim Hong-do (1745–c. 1806), known by his art name Danwon, was a Korean court painter of the Joseon dynasty from the jungin, or middle, class. He studied as a boy with the painter and critic Kang Sehwang, entered the royal Bureau of Painting in his early twenties, and in 1771 painted the crown prince, the future King Jeongjo; he was a favourite of Yeongjo and Jeongjo. He painted landscapes, Buddhist and Daoist themes, portraits, flowers and animals, but is known above all for humorous, lively genre scenes of ordinary people at work and leisure, gathered in the album Genre Paintings by Danwon. He is counted among the Three Wons of Joseon painting. The album of 25 leaves is held by the National Museum of Korea.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
