A red seal marks the lower left corner.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eKōno Bairei (1844–1895) was a Japanese painter of the Maruyama-Shijō school, active in Kyoto through the Meiji era. He trained under Nakajima Raishō and, after Raishō's death, under Shiokawa Bunrin, and specialized in kachō-e, bird-and-flower painting that combined native brushwork with elements of Western observational realism. In 1881 he published the woodblock album Bairei Hyakuchō Gafu (Album of One Hundred Birds) and, from 1880, ran a Kyoto painting school whose pupils included Takeuchi Seihō, Kawai Gyokudō and Uemura Shōen. He was appointed an Imperial Household Artist in 1893. His work is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Minneapolis Institute of Art.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePrinted as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
