Mostly anonymous and without formal training, the painters often travelled from place to place, adapting the subjects and styles of court and literati painting for screens, scrolls and walls. The pictures were meant to bring good fortune and keep evil away: tigers were pasted on doors at the New Year, paired birds among flowers wished for a happy marriage, peonies promised wealth, and crowds of children at play hoped for sons. Families of means hired professional painters, humbler households itinerant ones.
