Hunting became Kota's signature: large scenes of the Maharaos facing tigers, lions, boars and wild elephants in steep, densely wooded jungle, drawn with a fluent line and sparse colour, often from life. Kota artists also painted portraits, ragamalas and devotional pictures of Krishna in his Brijnathji form. Painting had a last flowering under Ram Singh II in the mid-nineteenth century and had disappeared by its end.
