In the courtyard at right a dancer in a long yellow-green skirt turns, another crouches, and a group of women play stringed instruments and a barrel drum. A white terrace wall, a lotus pond and a hillside of deer in yellow grass fill the top.

The original: gum tempera, ink and gold on paper, c. 1820; The Cleveland Museum of Art.

Kota school is the painting of Kota in southeastern Rajasthan, a state formed in the 1620s from part of Bundi, whose painters shared Bundi's idiom; an early painter who specialised in elephants and hunts moved from Bundi to Kota. Hunting became Kota's signature: large scenes of the Maharaos facing tigers, lions, boars and wild elephants in steep, densely wooded jungle, drawn with a fluent line and sparse colour, often from life. Kota artists also painted portraits, ragamalas and devotional pictures of Krishna in his Brijnathji form. Painting had a last flowering under Ram Singh II in the mid-nineteenth century and had disappeared by its end. Examples are held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Minneapolis Institute of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
