Devgarh's rulers kept a painting workshop through the eighteenth century and into the nineteenth, best known through the painter Bagta and his descendants Chokha and Baijnath, whose vigorous variant of the Udaipur style favoured horsemen, hunts, darbars and processions. Kushala's known work belongs to this tradition: a procession of 1825 in which the young Maharaja Balwant Singh of Ratlam gallops at the centre of his relatives and courtiers, the ends of his turban flying, painted in gum tempera with gold and silver.
