laszlo-moholy-nagy-k-vii-art-print
László Moholy-Nagy — K VII | Art Print

On a pale grey-white canvas, translucent rectangles overlap like sheets of tinted glass. A thin red line runs from top to bottom left of centre, with a fainter pink line to its right. At the left a black bar turns a right angle at the top, and a long horizontal band crosses the lower canvas, black at both ends and grey where it passes over lighter planes. Higher up, a narrower grey band crosses a small grey bracket shape and a pale yellow rectangle; wherever shapes overlap, the tone shifts.

The original: oil paint and graphite on canvas, 1922; Tate, London.

László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946) was a Hungarian painter, photographer and designer and one of the defining teachers of the Bauhaus, where he led the preliminary course and the metal workshop from 1923 to 1928.
