lawrence-alma-tadema-the-egyptian-widow-art-print
Lawrence Alma-Tadema — The Egyptian Widow | Art Print

In a temple hall of columns painted with hieroglyphs and lotus capitals, a woman in a dark blue-grey mantle kneels with her head bowed against a bier holding a mummy case painted in red, gold and blue. Behind it shaven-headed men in white sit chanting, one at a tall harp, and a decorated coffin stands at the left. A wooden door painted with lotus stems, a dark stone statue of a recumbent beast and palm fronds frame the scene above a polished red floor set with green rosettes.

The scene is the interior of an Egyptian temple, where a kneeling widow mourns beside the inner mummy case of her husband while priests and singers lament and play the harp. The picture is full of archaeological detail. It came to the Rijksmuseum in 1909 as a gift of Mr and Mrs Drucker-Fraser.

The original: Oil on panel, 1872; Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.

Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836–1912) was a Dutch-born painter who settled permanently in England after 1870. He trained at the Royal Academy of Antwerp under Gustaf Wappers and worked as an assistant to the history painter Baron Hendrik Leys before turning to the ancient Roman and Egyptian subjects for which he became known. His paintings set languid, finely dressed figures against meticulously researched marble interiors and Mediterranean views, prized in his lifetime for their archaeological detail and later criticized, then reassessed, for the same polished exactness. His paintings are held by Tate, the Walters Art Museum and Manchester Art Gallery.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
