leonardo-da-vinci-ginevra-de-benci-fine-art-print
Leonardo da Vinci — Ginevra de’ Benci | Fine Art Print

A young woman with pale skin and a high forehead looks out with heavy-lidded eyes, her hair falling in tight ringlets beneath a dark band. A dense juniper bush of spiky needles fills the space behind her head, and at the right a landscape opens onto a lake, russet trees, blue hills and a slender spire under a pale sky. She wears a brown bodice with gold edging and blue lacing, a sheer white layer at the neck and a black wrap.

Leonardo painted this portrait in Florence between about 1474 and 1478; the juniper behind her head, ginepro in Italian, puns on the sitter's name. It was in the Liechtenstein princes' collection by 1733, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington bought it from Prince Franz Josef II in 1967. It is the only Leonardo painting on public view in the Americas. The bottom of the panel was cut down at some point, taking her hands.

The original: oil on panel, about 1474-78; National Gallery of Art, Washington.

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) was a painter, draughtsman and engineer of the Florentine Renaissance. He trained in Florence in the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio before working for the courts of Milan, Rome and France. His paintings are built on subtle transitions of light and shadow, known as sfumato, and on carefully studied anatomy and drapery, and drawings such as the Vitruvian Man show the same scientific observation he brought to his notebooks. His paintings and drawings are held by the Louvre, the Uffizi Gallery and the National Gallery, London.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
