She wears a blue bodice with red sleeves and a yellow mantle against a dark interior, and the Child sits on an olive-gold cushion. Behind them two pairs of arched windows open on blue, craggy mountains, and a vase of flowers stands on the sill at the right.

The Alte Pinakothek counts this among the earliest panel paintings by Leonardo, made during his time in his teacher's workshop, and calls it an experiment in painting technique. The panel was once owned by Giulio de' Medici, later Pope Clement VII. The museum bought it in 1889 from Dr. A. Haug in Günzburg.

The original: oil on poplar panel, c. 1475; Alte Pinakothek, Munich.

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) was a painter, draughtsman and engineer of the Florentine Renaissance. He trained in Florence in the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio before working for the courts of Milan, Rome and France. His paintings are built on subtle transitions of light and shadow, known as sfumato, and on carefully studied anatomy and drapery, and drawings such as the Vitruvian Man show the same scientific observation he brought to his notebooks. His paintings and drawings are held by the Louvre, the Uffizi Gallery and the National Gallery, London.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
