He trained in Florence in the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio before working for the courts of Milan, Rome and France. His paintings are built on subtle transitions of light and shadow, known as sfumato, and on carefully studied anatomy and drapery, and drawings such as the Vitruvian Man show the same scientific observation he brought to his notebooks.
