At the time he was known in Paris as a caricaturist, drawing for journals such as Le Rire.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: colour lithograph poster, 1899, Library of Congress, Washington.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLeonetto Cappiello (1875–1942) reinvented the advertising poster. Arriving in Paris from Livorno in 1898 as a caricaturist, he replaced the descriptive Belle Époque bill with a single arresting figure on a flat black or coloured ground — the Cinzano zebra, the Maurin le Quina devil, the Cachou Lajaunie dancer — designed to be read in an instant from a passing tram. He produced more than a thousand posters.
