louis-rhead-packers-tar-soap-vintage-poster-print
Louis Rhead — Packer's Tar Soap | Vintage Poster Print

Facing the viewer, a woman lifts two handfuls of long copper-brown hair out to either side, a wreath of small pine cones across her brow. Her yellow gown has pale blue bands crossing the chest, small jewelled slits at the sleeves and a green oval brooch at the centre. Green pine-needle sprays and cones fill the blue ground behind her, repeated in a green and brown pine-cone border around the sheet. Big red capitals name the soap at upper left, and a pale panel at the foot advertises it for hair and skin.

The original: lithograph, 1895; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Louis Rhead (1857–1926) was an English-born American artist, illustrator and author. Born into a Staffordshire pottery family, he studied in Paris under Gustave Boulanger and at the National Art Training School in South Kensington, and worked for Minton and Wedgwood before moving to New York in 1883 as art director for the publisher D. Appleton. In the 1890s poster craze, influenced by Eugène Grasset, his work appeared regularly in Harper's, The Century, St. Nicholas and Scribner's, and in 1895 he won a gold medal at the first International Poster Show in Boston. He later illustrated children's classics and wrote American Trout-Stream Insects (1916).

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
