Bare navy trees stand either side of a frozen pond edged with green banks and patches of snow, and an orange sun sinks over a dark treeline under a yellow sky. Large navy lettering in the foreground reads Read The Sun, mirrored in pink reflections on the ice. A red and cream border surrounds the sheet; the monogram LJR is at lower left.

Louis Rhead (1857–1926) was an English-born American artist, illustrator and author. Born into a Staffordshire pottery family, he studied in Paris under Gustave Boulanger and at the National Art Training School in South Kensington, and worked for Minton and Wedgwood before moving to New York in 1883 as art director for the publisher D. Appleton. In the 1890s poster craze, influenced by Eugène Grasset, his work appeared regularly in Harper's, The Century, St. Nicholas and Scribner's, and in 1895 he won a gold medal at the first International Poster Show in Boston. He later illustrated children's classics and wrote American Trout-Stream Insects (1916).

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
